Dark City Movie Style Effect in Runway

Dark City Movie Style Effect in Runway

You all asked for it, so here it is: Dark City movie style effect tutorial. Here’s everything you need to make this effect yourself with RunwayML’s GEN-2 video AI tool + the new Multi Motion Brush.

Here are the original images, created in Midjourney. Prompt: “dark city at night, noir, fog, green and black, cinematic colors, cinematic lighting, in the style of Dark City –ar 16:9 –c 18 –v 6.0”

Steps to create Movie

Step one, upload your image and select the motion brush.

Step two, select the upper portion of the buildings you want to grow – leave about half of the first floor unselected. This is to avoid the entire building from rising up – we want to grow, not take off like a rocket ship.

Set your brushes on each building to a positive number. I recommend giving them all different values so they grow at different rates. I used values between 5.6 and 7.5, but you should experiment with different settings depending on the scene.

And finally, select the street and a bit of the lower portion of the buildings and set the ambient to 0.1. This will prevent unwanted camera movement in the vertical direction and force the AI to “grow” the buildings as seen in the video.

And there you have it. You may need to reroll a few times, but those are the steps.
