In the realm of digital creativity, Runway’s Motion Brush tool stands out as a remarkable feature, offering users the ability to animate images with precision and ease. This article provides a detailed guide on how to use the Motion Brush interface within Runway’s Gen 2 platform.

Getting Started with Motion Brush

Step 1: Image Upload

Firstly, you need an image to work with. You can upload your own image to the Gen-2 UI by dragging and dropping it, or create a new image within Runway using the text-to-video panel in Gen 2 or the text-to-image tool.

Step 2: Activating Runway Motion Brush

Once your image is loaded into Gen 2, click on the Motion Brush button to begin.

Step 3: Brushing the Area

Brush over the area of the image you want to animate.

To adjust the brush size, use the slider.

If you overpaint, switch to the Eraser tool or use the undo arrow at the top. Redo steps are also available.

Step 4: Setting Motion Parameters

Now, focus on the motion control settings: horizontal, vertical, and proximity.

  • Horizontal Movement (X-axis): Controls left or right movement. Negative values move the subject left, and positive values move it right.
  • Vertical Movement (Y-axis): Manages up and down movement. Negative values move the subject down, and positive values move it up.
  • Proximity (Z-axis): Adjusts the subject’s distance from the camera. Negative values move the subject farther, and positive values bring it closer.

Each slider operates on a decimal point value between 0 (no motion) and 10 (maximum motion).

You can manually input values, drag the text field, or use the slider.

Step 5: Resetting Controls

To reset a slider, click the arrow next to it. To reset everything, including your mask, click the clear button:

Step 6: Saving and Generating

After setting your mask and motion controls, click the save button to save the mask. Then, return to Runway Gen-2 and click the generate button to animate the masked area of your image:
